Overview
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Blood Bank Supervisor to oversee laboratory operations related to blood banking and transfusion services. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, extensive clinical laboratory experience, and expertise in blood bank procedures. This role is vital in ensuring the safety, quality, and compliance of blood products and laboratory processes within a hospital or clinical setting. The Blood Bank Supervisor will be responsible for managing laboratory staff, maintaining rigorous quality standards, and ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily blood bank operations, including specimen collection, processing, and storage of blood products.
  • Oversee laboratory testing procedures such as ELISA, PCR, flow cytometry, immunoassays, and other assays relevant to blood banking.
  • Ensure accurate data management using laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and document management systems.
  • Maintain compliance with all regulatory standards including QA/QC protocols and quality assurance programs.
  • Manage scheduling of laboratory personnel to ensure 24/7 coverage and operational efficiency.
  • Oversee inventory control of blood components and reagents, ensuring proper storage conditions.
  • Supervise staff performing phlebotomy, venipuncture, blood sampling, and specimen processing with aseptic techniques.
  • Implement and monitor quality control measures to uphold high standards of laboratory testing accuracy.
  • Provide training and mentorship to laboratory technicians on laboratory techniques, safety procedures, and compliance management.
  • Collaborate with clinical teams on specimen collection/processing and support clinical trials or research laboratory activities as needed.
  • Conduct regular audits and reviews of laboratory procedures to ensure compliance with hospital policies and regulatory agencies.
  • Lead investigations into discrepancies or errors in testing or sample handling; implement corrective actions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Extensive clinical laboratory experience with a focus on blood banking or transfusion services.
  • Proven supervisory or management experience within a hospital or research laboratory setting.
  • Proficiency in laboratory techniques including ELISA, RNA extraction, DNA isolation, PCR, flow cytometry, immunoassays, and other relevant assays.
  • Strong knowledge of physiology, anatomy, medical terminology, and laboratory procedures related to blood sampling and specimen collection.
  • Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), document management systems, and schedule management tools.
  • Familiarity with quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC), compliance management, and regulatory standards such as CLIA or CAP accreditation requirements.
  • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to supervise staff effectively while fostering a collaborative team environment.
  • Strong analysis skills for data collection, interpretation of test results, and report generation.
  • Knowledge of hospital workflows including vital signs monitoring and aseptic techniques during specimen handling.
